Brinjal is also known as :- Egg plant
Brinjal fruit are good source of :- Vitamin-B

Soil :-

Well drained soil rich in organic matter.

pH :-

6.5 - 7.5 suitable

Season of sowing :-

Planting spreads from December - January and May - June.

Seed rate :-

  • Normal varieties :- 200 g/ha
  • Hybrid varieties :- 100 g/ha

Nursery area :-

100 m2/ha

Spacing :-

  • Normal varieties :- 60 x 60 cm
  • Hybrid varieties :- 75 x 60 cm

Application of fertilizer :-

N:P:K for basal dose.
  • Nitrogen (N) :- 50 kg/ha
  • Phosphors (P) :- 50 kg/ha
  • Potash (K) :- 30 kg/ha
Nitrogen (N) 50 kg/ha 30 day's after transplanting.

Harvesting :-

Harvesting can be done 55 - 60 day's after transplanting fruits are harvested at tender stage at 4 - 5 day's interval.

Yield :-

  • Normal / Improved variety :- 25 - 30 tonnes/ha
  • Hybrid variety :- 45 - 50 tonnes/ha


  • Anthocyanin pigment present in brinjal.
  • Dry fruit content goitrogenic principle.
  • Heterostyly is common in brinjal.
  • Orobanche is serious weed affecting brinjal crop in some areas.
  • 2,4-D chemical is used to control weeds.
  • Dark purple brinjal have more Vitamin-C than those of white skin.
  • Maximum fruit setting takes place in long styled flowers (70-80 %).
  • Opening of flower in brinjal at 6-7.30 am in summer and 11.5 am in winter.
  • White brinjal is preferred by diabetics patient.
  • Brinjal have bidirectional root system.
