Black Gram / Urad Bean Crop



Botanical Name :- Vigna mungo
Family :- Papilionaceae
Origin :- India
2n :- 22
  • Seed Rate :- 20-25 kg/ha
  • Spacing :- 40 X 10 cm
  • Yield of black gram is :- 10-12 q/ha
  • 1st black gram variety relished in 1948 is :- Type-9 (T-9)
  • Mutant variety of black gram :- Co-1 and Sarla
  • Black gram fresh weight :- 40 g /1000 grain
  • Black gram weight :- 40-50 mg

According to Bose (1932) Vigna mungo is subdivided two subspecies :-

  1. Vigna mungo Var. Niger :- Early maturity (Black Color)
  2. Vigna mungo Var. Viridis :- Late maturity (Green Color)

Black Gram Content :-

  • Protein :- 24%
  • Carbohydrates :- 60%
  • Fat :- 1.3%

Climatic Requirement :-

  • Tropical crop
  • Tolerates high temperature
  • Also cultivated in summer season
  • Short day plant to day neutral cultivars available
  • Optimum temperature between 25 to 35 °C
  • It can tolerate 42 °C

  • Rice - Rice - Black Gram
  • Black Gram - Barley
  • Black Gram - Wheat
  • Black Gram - Paddy - Groundnut
